Best Restaurants -(Vegetarian)
Le Bistro Montage
(Restaurants - Vegetarian)
301 SE Morrison StPortland OR 97214 503-234-1324
Description:
For casual, upbeat ambience, Montage can't be beat. It's also a favorite with Portland locals, who come frequently for the late-night eats. Cajun-inspired food is the appeal, especially the multiple recipes of jambalaya. You'll also find blackened catfish, Cajun chicken, frog legs, cajun gator bites, and a variety of other bayou-flavored dishes. Since patrons sit at long, communal tables, realize that you're in for a social experience, and know that servers like to throw a little attitude around just to add character. Hip clientele, alternative music and festive ambience recommend it as well, especially when you're craving something substantial late in the evening.
Legin
(Restaurants - Vegetarian)
8001 SE Division StPortland OR 97206 503-777-2828
Description:
A strong contender for having the best dim sum in town, Legin certainly offers an extensive selection. The large space comes complete with fresh fish tanks and a wealth of Asian patrons, who validate the authenticity of the cuisine. They sample all the best dishes and even take advantage of such delicacies as chicken feet and sea cucumber. But if you opt to stick to basics, you certainly can't go wrong with shrimp dumplings, spring rolls, barbecue pork buns and savory vegetable dishes. The steamed fish, tender and aromatic, also makes for a terrific choice. Although Legin is usually packed at lunchtime on the weekends, you'll do well if you come early and head off the crowds.
Mother's Bistro & Bar
(Restaurants - Vegetarian)
409 SW 2nd AvePortland OR 97204 503-464-1122
Description:
DOWNTOWN. Chef Lisa Schroeder is not only CIA-trained (as in Culinary Institute of America), but she's also the mom behind the restaurant's name. Given such a combination, it should come as little surprise that expertly crafted comfort food figures prominently on the menu. Meatloaf, daily variations on mac-and-cheese, and roasted chicken are just some of the familiar items on the menu. Every month, a special menu features a "Mom of the Month" and some of her recipes, so in addition to the staple menu, you can always find an assortment of other regional dishes, such as Austrian beef goulash or Italian Pasta y Fagioli. Desserts are just as good and homemade as you knew they'd be, from chocolate cake to ice cream and fruit pies.
Old Wives Tales
(Restaurants - Vegetarian)
1300 E Burnside StPortland OR 97214 503-238-0470
Description:
One thing's for sure: Contrary to the eatery's name, good food is no old wives' tale at this long-lived institution. Located at the corner of SE 13th Avenue, Old Wives is a terrific place for kids and adults. Little ones love the play area and the great "kid friendly" menu. Adults enjoy the open space, superb service, and variety of vegetarian dishes. If you're not completely enamored of the no-meat mentality, most entrees can be made non-vegetarian as quick as you can say "smoked salmon!" Breakfast is also a great choice for patrons of all ages.
Plainfield's Mayur
(Restaurants - Vegetarian)
852 SW 21st AvePortland OR 97205 503-223-2995
Description:
The lovely architecture of a Victorian home, complemented by Indian artifacts, presents diners with gracious surroundings. The able kitchen supplies great Indian cuisine, as it has done for more than a generation. This family-owned enterprise serves only the best foods, from tikka masala (tandoor-cooked chicken) to spice-coated prawns and duck breast in almond sauce. Vegetarians are also pleased by the extensive meatless offerings, including spiced okra and a medley of braised vegetables in yogurt-almond sauce. Homemade chutneys add an extra layer of flavor to the meal, and a great wine list includes vintages from several hundred years back.
